The Floating Piers is an art installation created by the Bulgarian-born artist Christo Vladimirov Javacheff, commonly known as Christo. The installation consists of a series of bright yellow fabric-covered floating walkways that connect the shores of Lake Iseo in northern Italy.
The project was open to the public for 16 days in June 2016, attracting more than 1.2 million visitors. The walkways were 3 kilometers long and covered in shimmering yellow fabric, creating a surreal and ethereal experience for the visitors.
The floating piers were made of 220,000 high-density polyethylene cubes, which were initially assembled on land and then floated on the lake's surface. The installation used around 100,000 square meters of fabric to cover the walkways.
The purpose of The Floating Piers was to allow visitors to experience the sensation of walking on water and to create a connection between the land and the lake. The installation transformed the lake into an interactive artwork, challenging visitors' perception of space and inviting them to explore the surrounding natural environment.
Due to its popularity, The Floating Piers had a significant impact on the local economy, attracting tourists from all over the world and boosting the region's tourism industry.
After the 16-day exhibition, the installation was disassembled, and all the materials were recycled and repurposed, following Christo's commitment to environmental sustainability in his art projects.
The Floating Piers was considered one of Christo's most ambitious and successful projects, showcasing his ability to create immersive and awe-inspiring installations in nature.
